Design Phase Begins for Local Mobility Program Near Bergstrom Airport

The Austin Public Works Urban Trails Program is developing an abandoned rail corridor into an urban trail for pedestrians and bicycles. Once complete, the Bergstrom Spur Trail will be approximately 6.5 miles long and connect Vinson Drive in south Austin to East Riverside Drive and US-183 in southeast Austin, along with many other parks, neighborhoods, and destinations.

The Urban Trails Program identified the Bergstrom Spur Trail as a high-priority project in the 2014 Urban Trails Plan. The trail was prioritized for its potential to greatly enhance local urban trail access in southwest Austin, to improve connectivity, and to provide a viable route to walk or bike to the airport.

Redevelopment opportunities are an attractive option for investors entering a new market as well as those looking to reevaluate their existing strategic asset management plan.

Similar trail projects have been developed in cities such as Durham, Atlanta, and New York, as well as a canal/rail trail from Washington DC to Pittsburgh. Each has drawn mixed reactions from residents and tourists, respectively citing skyrocketing property taxes and renewed opportunities for residential and commercial redevelopment.

The Bergstrom Spur Trail will be developed as three segments. Once complete, the three segments will function and feel like a cohesive, continuous trail. The cost is to be determined. Read more about the transit developments and timelines here: https://bit.ly/3pA8Eaf
